Futbol

Coach Richard sent this email to the defenders. I hope it goes around to the offense, too!

Good Afternoon!

I want to take a moment for us determine our relationship with the football (the actual, physical ball).

But before we get into that, if you didn't know already, Disney just released a hi-def version of Beauty and the Beast on DVD yesterday. I'm sure you've all seen the movie and if you have not, you should buy it because it is one of my top 5 animated movies of all time. Not because of the story but because Gaston is one of my favorite characters. The story itself is a classic fairy tale about looking past someone's exterior and finding their true inner beauty within.

Just as Belle was able to find inner beauty within the Beast, so can you with the football!

So I know the football is a tough, thick, leathery-skinned ball. And it's not a pretty color like a white baseball, green tennis ball, or an orange basketball, it's an ugly poo brown. It's not even round like it's baseball, tennis ball, and basketball cousins, it's this ugly oblong shape (I think the technical name is "prolate spheroid" for you geometry nerds). And it's got a huge, white stitch on the side that looks like a Frankenstein scar. Definitely, the football is the ugly duckling amongst all sports balls.

But a football really has a sensitive, kind heart despite having such a hard life. It wants to see both the offense and defense do well. It always feels bad when it jams a finger or leaves a bruise. And no other ball is like it, the baseball is much too diva to be touched by hands that it needs to be handled by a glove, the tennis ball won't even go near you as it only wants to be handled by a racquet, and the basketball hates being in your hands so much that it needs to be constantly dribbled and just wants to hurry and get out of your hands into the hoop.

Ah, but the humble football's home? It's home is the warm comfort and loving security of your hands. "Home sweet home" whispers the football every time you catch it.
